Keeping Fitness Fun during Social Distancing

I teach Zumba classes, dance classes and other fitness classes. When people attend classes like these get the obvious fitness benefits, but also the social connections from being part of a group. So what do we do when our fitness classes are on a “social distancing” hiatus?

Stay active! Unless you yourself are sick, get outside and go for a walk or a run, just be sure to wave at other walkers from a distance! If you are really missing your favorite class format though, there are many online options. Some are free, some are not.

YouTube: You can find MANY yoga classes on YouTube for free. Some, of course, are better than others. I haven’t tried them all and certainly can’t rate them all, but this writer for SELF scoped out a few you could try: https://www.self.com/story/best-youtube-yoga-channels

Paid Yoga Sites When it comes to paid online yoga options, I prefer Glo.com. The instructors I have tried are excellent. You can search by class length, style, focus, body part, and more. They also offer pilates and meditation. There is a free trial period and after that it is $18/month. Some of my favorite instructors are Amy Ippoliti, Felicia Tomasko and Alex Von Frank. I often found inspiration among their classes when I was subbing restorative yoga classes where I teach.

Dance Fitness Formats

I teach Zumba®, Zumba Gold® and WERQ® dance fitness. As per our license agreements we are not allowed to stream or record our classes for these formats. There has been some discussion on the instructor message boards that Zumba Fitness® may change that temporarily during this time of social distancing, but at this time that is not the case. WERQ® has stated they will not allow it, citing the music licensing issues as one reason.

If you are a WERQ fitness fan, head to YouTube for the WERQ playlist they have created featuring their Master Trainers leading current songs. They also have a number of their other songs available on their page so you could create your own playlist too.

WERQ fitness creator, Haley Stone, recently partnered with Neou Fitness online to offer unique WERQ choreography and songs on their online streaming platform. They have other fitness formats as well. $14.99/month or $49.99/year for the first year.

Zumba Fitness®
Zumba Fitness has one playlist on their YouTube site that would provide you with a glimpse of what we receive as instructors (sort of). I have also created some public playlists of other people’s choreography posted on YouTube that I have borrowed or modified and used in my classes.

Other Formats

Les Mills On Demand
If you are a BodyPump fan, you will find Les Mills OnDemand a familiar and welcome addition. You will need a little bit of equipment for that format. They offer 800+ demand classes in most of the other Les Mills formats like BodyFlow, Sh’Bam (dance), Barre, BodyCombat, CXWorx and more. They offer a 14-day free trial and then there are pricing options from 9.99-12.99/month.

While it is difficult to replicate classical pilates without a reformer and a great instructor, there are mat pilates options online. The Balanced Life Sisterhood offers a nice program, but enrollment only opens for short windows during the year. Good news, she has a number of free videos on YouTube as well.

Locally, Emily at EJ Movement in Prairie du Sac is excellent. She has offered some great basic tutorials on her Instagram page, and as far as I know her beautiful riverfront studio is open during this pandemic situation. Her class sizes are very small and you are not close together.

CrossFit/And Other Formats (that I don’t teach)

CrossFit fans can find many WODs online, like this list. Or, just google WOD or search for it on YouTube for many options. My husband uses the app from beyondthewhiteboard that is tied to his CrossFit Coach.

For my local fitness friends who are fans of Qi Gong with Karyn at La Vita, you will want to follow her Facebook page, Moving Your Energy. She has posted a variety of resources and videos there.

There are so many options online, and while none of them have quite the same support as being in the group setting, they will help you stay active while you are avoiding social settings for the greater good. Just do a little searching and you can find something to keep you active while at home.
